My dad was injured in the line of duty as an NYPD officer during a high-speed chase. His leg was crushed in the crash, and despite multiple surgeries, he was left with permanent damage and walked with a limp for the rest of his career. Not long after, he was diagnosed with progressive multiple sclerosis.
Today, my dad can no longer move from the neck down. He requires full-time care for even the simplest tasks. The smart-home features in our home have given him a level of independence we never thought possible. They make it safer to use his Hoyer lift, help him adjust his surroundings, and allow him to communicate his needs. For him, this means dignity and comfort. For our family, it means relief and peace of mind.
Having our mortgage paid in full has lifted an enormous burden. Instead of worrying about finances while covering medical supplies that insurance doesn’t pay for, we can focus entirely on my dad’s care and quality of life. Knowing our home is secure gives us stability, hope, and the ability to truly function as a family again—not just as caregivers.
